We’re Back…..!!

The first volunteer work party since the covid-19 lock-down restrictions took place on Thursday 6th August 2020 at Ashlawn Cutting.

The primary task was the removal of Melilot, before it can distribute more seed. This is an attractive non-native plant, but can become invasive at the expense of the native plant species that we want to prosper.

The warm and calm day showed off the butterfly and other invertebrate species that benefit from the careful management of the reserve. It’s well worth taking a slow walk along the main path to observe what is in the air and what is feeding on the open flowers. Take the time to look at the common ragwort to find caterpillars of the Cinnabar moth busily feeding. Their bold markings are to inform birds that they are bad to eat!
