Newbold Quarry Canal Glade

Recent work party sessions at the quarry have focused on clearing what use to be a private garden alongside the canal towpath.

The site was fully overgrown with multiple small self seeded trees and a wholesale covering of ivy. The aim of the work is to restore this ground to support grass and wildflowers, while hopefully retaining some of the fruiting trees. This clearing will also make the oak trees that border the canal be more visible.

The work has created a vast amount of cut material. Where possible, this has been incorporated into a dead hedge that borders the canal towpath. The smaller material all went into a bonfire at the last work party.

There is potential to further extend this clearing, going towards the allotments. That will have to wait for the next autumn/winter season. The remaining task for now is to “tidy up” by reducing the ground covering ivy.
